David Turner Wins NDP Nomination for Victoria David Turner was nominated as the candidate for the New Democratic Party of Canada in the Victoria riding for the upcoming federal election. Turner was confirmed today, following the adjudication of special ballots, after Saturday's nomination meeting ended without a winner being declared. Charley Beresford was the other candidate seeking the NDP nomination in Victoria. The final result was 184 votes for Turner and 181 for Beresford. "I want to congratulate both candidates for running such strong and dynamic campaigns," said Erik Kaye, president of the Victoria federal NDP. "With a record crowd of 450 supporters attending the nomination meeting Saturday night, the Victoria NDP is energized like never before and ready to take on the Martin Liberals and the Mulroney-style Conservatives." Special ballots were cast at Saturday's nomination in cases where the eligibility of the voter was unconfirmed. Those ballots were sealed and went uncounted until today when the eligibility of voters could be verified with the B.C. NDP Provincial Office in Burnaby. Scrutineers representing both candidates were on hand for the final count today. "I want to thank the candidates, their representatives and campaign volunteers for being cooperative and supportive throughout this process," said nominations committee chair Marianne Alto. "Democracy is rarely easy, or quick, but striving for fairness meant taking the time to ensure that every eligible voter was able to cast a ballot for the candidate of their choice." -30- Information: Marianne Alto, 250-886-1733 (cell)
